Decorative Concrete That Suits Desert Landscaping
Stamped and decorative concrete gives a Tempe patio, entry or pool deck the look of flagstone, slate or brick without laying individual pieces. It pairs naturally with desert landscaping: tan, sand and terracotta tones next to decomposed granite, palo verde and block walls. It also has to deal with strong sun that fades color, heat that softens poor sealers, and monsoon water that makes a smooth surface slick.
Choosing a pattern and color
Popular patterns include random flagstone, ashlar slate, cobblestone and running-bond brick. Larger stone patterns read well on a big patio, while smaller brick or cobble patterns suit borders and walks. Color is usually added two ways: color mixed into the whole batch, and a contrasting release agent dusted on before stamping to bring out the texture. Lighter base colors stay cooler in the sun and show less fading.
Texture matters
Stamped surfaces carry real texture from the stamp mats, which gives grip. For pool areas and sloped walks we choose patterns with more texture and add a slip-resistant additive to the sealer. A smooth, glossy finish looks good when dry and becomes slippery when wet, so we steer clear of it where people walk barefoot or in the rain.
Other decorative options
- Stained concrete: acid or water-based stains for a mottled, natural look on new or existing slabs.
- Exposed aggregate: the top paste washed away to show the stone underneath.
- Scored or saw-cut patterns: tile or diamond grids cut into plain concrete.
- Decorative borders: a stamped or colored band around a plain broom-finish slab, often the best value on driveways.
- Stamped overlays: a thin stamped layer over sound existing concrete when tear-out is not needed.
How stamped work is done
Stamping happens on the same day as the pour, in a short window when the concrete is firm enough to hold the pattern but still soft enough to take it. In summer that window closes fast, so we pour at first light, keep the pour to a size the crew can stamp in time, and bring enough people to do it right. Joints are cut along pattern lines where they blend in.
Sealing and upkeep
Sealer protects the color and makes the surface easier to clean. HomeGuide's driveway guide recommends waiting 28 to 30 days before the first sealer coat and resealing every 2 to 3 years. In strong sun, regular resealing is what keeps stamped concrete from looking chalky. Sweep it often, rinse off pool chemicals and fertilizer, and avoid harsh cleaners that strip the sealer.

Stamped & Decorative Concrete Questions
Is stamped concrete slippery?
It can be if it is sealed with a glossy coat and no grit. We use textured patterns and add a slip-resistant additive to the sealer around pools and on slopes.
Does stamped concrete fade in the Arizona sun?
Color does soften over time in strong sun, especially if the sealer wears off. Integral color, lighter tones and resealing every 2 to 3 years keep it looking even.
Can you stamp my existing patio?
If the slab is sound and mostly level, a stamped overlay can go over it. HomeGuide lists single-pattern overlays at $7 to $15 a square foot. A cracked or settled slab should be repaired or replaced first.
Does stamped concrete crack?
All concrete can crack. Planned joints placed along pattern lines give it a place to do so where it blends in, and a good base limits movement.
